New York Jets Draft Rumors: Barkevious Mingo Top Option, Rex Ryan Impressed by Linebacker as Darrelle Revis Trade Looms

The New York Jets have gone back and forth on NFL draft options. One minute they are smitten with a quarterback option and the next minute they are in love with a cornerback. With the No.9 overall pick, they have their choice at almost any player they want and have reportedly narrowed their focus to a defensive player. While this year's draft class is filled with defensive talent, SI.com reports the Jets are highly targeting linebacker Barkevious Mingo with their first pick.

The former LSU linebacker was projected as a possible top-5 selection, depending on team needs. The Arizona Cardinals select two picks ahead of the Jets and are in the market for a player at the same position. With several linebackers ranked high on draft boards, they may or may not draft Mingo. The Jets had also shown interest in drafting Alabama guard Chance Warmack or wide receiver Tavon Austin, but the team is deciding to focus on defense as the possible trade of Darrelle Revis seems more likely by the day.

Head coach Rex Ryan is reportedly very impressed with Mingo. The team scouted him heavily during the NFL combine and LSU's Pro Day. If Ryan is serious about liking what he sees in the linebacker, the Jets will grab Mingo at No.9, as long as he is still there.

Mingo's numbers a slightly underwhelming compared to others in the draft. In 2012, he recorded 38 tackles and 4.5 sacks. Those are not typical first-round draft pick numbers. However, Mingo shows great versatility and athleticism on his game tape, making him in high demand with teams. He can step in immediately and be a strong pass rusher, something the Jets are in need of. Mingo has gotten comparisons to the likes of DeMarcus Ware or James Harrison. Depsite his numbers being low, his upside is through the roof.

The Jets have yet to really nail down a draft plan as they are waiting to find out what happens with Darrelle Revis. They are asking for three picks, including Tampa Bay's first round pick. That would leave the Jets picking at No.9 and again at No. 13. It all remains to be seen, but all signs point to Mingo headed to New York.
