Jackie Robinson Day is one of the most important days on the baseball schedule and with the film "42" out in theaters it has even more attention as Major League Baseball honors Robinson by having all players wear number 42 on Monday.
Robinson made his major league debut on this day in 1947 and after doing it in 2004 for the first time, MLB has all players wear number 42 to honor him as the first black major league player who broke the color barrier. All stadiums have retired his number in the past and Robinson is also in the Baseball Hall of Fame with that number. Robinson made his debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers and all players wear the number while teams may hold events during the day to continue that tradition.
Mariano Rivera still wears 42 since he was grandfathered in when all teams retired the number and Robinson's widow has said that Rivera is a shining example of Jackie and what he stood for. The Rays and Red Sox are playing early due to Patriots Day and the Boston Marathon, while the Dodger play the Padres on Monday night and the Marlins and Nationals also face off.
The Phillies and Reds play, while the Angels and Twins square off in Minnesota, while the Cardinals and Pirates play in Pittsburgh and the White Sox and Blue Jays play in Toronto.
