Way before Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant went down to injury after suffering an Achilles tear this season, there was an expectation within the organization that center Dwight Howard would eventually become the focal centerpiece and take over the team.
While the free agent-to-be has remained noncommittal throughout the entire season, USA Today is reporting that two players close to him said they fully expect him to return.
While the Lakers continue to make their playoff push, distraught fans can breathe a slight sigh of relief as the season comes to an end, they may be witnessing a preview of the years to come.
"It's almost like you're envisioning yourself three years from now, four years from now, what is that (like)? " Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni told USA TODAY Sports on Sunday regarding Howard now playing without Bryant. "Well the future is now. I think he's up to the challenge."
Though this may be promising news, Howard is notoriously indecisive, meaning there's a chance he can change his mind by the time the off season comes around.
If Howard were to stay he will most definitely seek the maximum extension with the Lakers that would be for five years' worth $117.9 million. All other teams could give him a four year, $87.8 million contract.
Recently Howard has embraced his new leadership role in Bryant's absence, with the belief that this year's team has the pieces in place to "make history" and end the season on a high note.
"Despite whatever happened this season, we have a chance to win the next game, make the playoffs and make history," Howard said. "Me being the leader in the team, I believe we can win. Now we'll go out and play like it.
"I have to go out there, play my game and have fun and not let anything affect me as a player," Howard said. "It's not about scoring 50 points or 20 rebounds every night. It's about going out with the same effort and showing the guys we'll hard from the beginning to the end."
