Tim Tebow is the big story as always at New York Jets offseason workouts and after some questioning by reporters to general manager John Idzik about the quarterback situation for next season, he was as unclear as one could be, saying that he may or may not be part of the competition at the position.
According to ESPN.com, Idzik was asked about Tebow and his future with the team and the possibility of him starting next season and the general manager responded by saying he was "happy" to have Tebow on the roster, but did not specify whether he would be in the running for the starting job. Last season Tebow as the backup and barely played and was then skipped for Greg McElroy when Mark Sanchez was benched.
Idzik said that Tebow is a member of the Jets, but that "I'm not saying he is, I'm not saying he isn't. I'm just saying let's let things play out." The Jets have a number of positions to deal with as the draft approaches, but quarterback may not be one of them, as they already have Tebow, Sanchez, McElroy, Matt Simms and David Garrard on the roster. The team has been looking at a number of names, including Barkevious Mingo, Chance Warmack and Cordarrelle Patterson among many others.
The Tebow situation also took another strange turn on Wednesday, as one of his former coaches accused the Denver Broncos of a conspiracy after trading him to the Jets, saying that the team wanted him to fail. He also went at Sanchez, saying he is fragile minded and that the Broncos were looking to "kill" an opponent with the trade. The remarks were in response to Jeff Garcia, who worked with Sanchez in the offseason, and his criticism of Tebow, saying that the Jets should get rid of him.
Tebow has been working out all offseason in Florida, Texas and Arizona, where he worked with Steve Clarkson, who made those comments about the Broncos trade. While the motivation may have been there, the facts don't back it up, as Tebow had the chance to choose where he got traded to and clearly that was a mistake.
Last season the Jets barely used Tebow and he basically served as a decoy and as a special teams player while gaining just 102 yards on the ground and 39 in the air and scoring zero touchdowns.
