Rex Ryan has never been one to hide his opinion on things. This is the head coach that is constantly promising the New York Jets will make it to the Super Bowl year after year. In a conference call on Thursday, Ryan decided to speak his mind again. After hearing the Baltimore Ravens would have to begin their season on the road, the head coach expressed his disappointment in Major League Baseball and the Baltimore Orioles.
Ryan stuck up for the reigning Super Bowl champions while letting his disappointment in the MLB be known. The Orioles refuse to re-schedule their baseball game that would have happened at the same time as the Ravens' home opener. The two teams share a parking lot and some were concerned it would cause traffic and other issues in the city.
"I understand the Orioles are playing a game at home. Well, who really cares? You've got 81 of them things at home and maybe you could've done the right thing and given one up and played 82 on the road and 80 at home. I really don't think people are going to care about that game."
The reigning Super Bowl champs have played their season opener at home every season since 2004. The Ravens will break that streak when they travel to Denver to kickoff the season against the Broncos on Thursday, Sept. 5. The game will air on NBA and be broadcasted nationally.
"If baseball had a 16-game schedule, you might understand it. But when they have 162 games, I think you might just, out of common courtesy, say, 'You know what, maybe I'll play this one on the raod or whatever.'"
Ryan has some connection to the Ravens which might explain why he was so passionate about the topic. He was a member of the Ravens coaching staff from 1999 to 2008. His connection to the fan base and the city was the reason such a heated response was spurred on. Ryan notes that while he loves the state of New York, he spent 10 years in Baltimore and still feels a great deal loyalty to the area.
