Liverpool forward Luis Suarez plumbed the depths of unacceptable behavior on the pitch when he bit the arm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic in their English Premier League game at Anfield Sunday.
After videos clearly showed Suarez's unbelievable act, the Uruguayan apologized unconditionally to Ivanovic.
In a game which should have seen Suarez make the headlines for the right reasons, after his dramatic late equalizer, the striker, a shortlisted nominee for the PFA Player of the Year Awards, had no option but to apologise, with his regret first coming via his Twitter feed, before making an official statement through the club's website.
"I'm sad for what happened this afternoon, I apologize (to) Ivanovic and all football world for my inexcusable behaviour. I'm so sorry about it!!" he wrote on his Twitter account.
Soon after that Suarez released a statement tendering his apology yet again.
"I am deeply sorry for my inexcusable behaviour earlier today during our match against Chelsea," Suarez said in his statement.
"I have issued an apology and have tried to contact Branislav Ivanovic to speak to him personally. I apologise also to my manager, playing colleagues and everyone at Liverpool Football Club for letting them down."
He later revealed on Twitter that Ivanovic had accepted his apology. "I've just spoken to Ivanovic on the phone and I could apologise directly to him. Thanks for accepting," he wrote.
Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre had to cancel a trip to Australia to deal with the problem.
"Luis has made an unreserved apology for his actions today," he said in a statement.
"His behaviour is not befitting of any player wearing a Liverpool shirt and Luis is aware that he has let himself and everyone associated with the club down.
"We will deal with the matter internally and await any action from the F.A."
The F.A. will be under pressure to take strict action, which could see Suarez banned for the rest of the season. Suarez copped a seven-game ban during his time at Ajax for biting the shoulder of PSV's Otman Bakkal.
