Rick Ankiel has made his way to the outfield after starting his career on the pitcher's mound, but no matter where he came from he was not prepared for the surprise he got in the Houston outfield while trying to rob a home run on Sunday, as a fan showered him in popcorn.
According to Yahoo, Ankiel was trying to rob a home run for the Houston Astros against the Cleveland Indians and when he reached out to make the catch, he collided with a fan and ended up being covered in popcorn. The ball was hit directly to right field and Ankiel looked like he had a good beat on it and when he went up to jump and try to rob the ball, he was showered in the popcorn that a fan had in his hands right at the wall.
Drew Stubbs hit the bomb at Minute Maid Park but Ankiel never could get his glove on it once it collided with the popcorn and left him head to toe in kernels. The Astros ended up losing the game on the home run as a decider since it was 5-4 and the team now is struggling hard at 5-13 in the AL West.
The Astros have made the move from the NL to the AL this season and Ankiel's attempted catch was reminiscent of a number of other incidents with players, including when Al Smith was showered with beer at the World Series back in 1959.
