The fight for Branden Albert continues on as the Kansas City Chiefs remain undecided with what to do with the tackle. Albert is currently sitting in limbo. He is waiting to see what the Chiefs will do in the upcoming NFL draft and if he will finally be allowed to get traded as both the Miami Dolphins and the Arizona Cardinals are in a race to get him.
The Miami Dolphins have made it clear they are willing to give Albert the long-term contract he desires and are looking to work out a trade with the Chiefs. The offer from Miami is reportedly around six years, $53.4 million. The Dolphins originally refused to give that size of a contract to tackle Jake Long, but are now willing to meet Albert on the offer. They must also give the Chiefs a second-round pick as compensation to Kansas City. This has been the holdup on the trade. The Dolphins feel a second-round draft pick may be too high. The team has two second-round picks, so realistically, it should not be an issue.
The Arizona Cardinals are also reportedly showing interest in Albert as multiple teams are looking to make a run at linemen in the draft. The Cardinals are looking at multiple tackles with their first-round pick, but many of them could be gone by the time the Cardinals make their first selection. The issue is that Albert's contract demands might be too high for Arizona. They are willing to part with the second-round draft pick, but cannot afford the size of the salary.
Albert still has to take a physical before any trading can go down. The Chiefs have been fairly quiet in terms of trading him. If a deal is going to happen, it could go down on draft day. With the Dolphins willing to give Albert the contract he wants, Arizona could be left on the outside looking in. The ball is in the Chiefs court. They have the No. 1 overall draft pick. They can easily grab the best tackle and send the unhappy Albert on his way to Miami. It will not be too much longer before the future of Albert is decided.
