Manchester United Transfer News: Modric Would Be a Perfect Fit at United, According to Macari

Former Manchester United player Lou Macari believes Luka Modric would be a perfect fit at Old Trafford, as rumors continue to swirl over a possible summer move for the Real Madrid midfielder.

Modric only signed for Real from Tottenham last summer, but the move has not quite gone according to plan, with the Croatian international finding himself on the bench more often than not.

He was also voted as the worst summer signing in La Liga by Marca readers, and reports have suggested Modric might be open to a move back to the English Premier League, where he was considered one of the best midfielders.

Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-term admirer and tried to make a move for the 27-year-old a couple of years ago.

With Paul Scholes expected to retire at the end of the season, United will be in need of a midfielder capable of running the show, and Modric is seen as the perfect replacement for the United legend.

"One name that keeps cropping up is Luka Modric," Macari told talkSPORT. "If they did sign someone like him I'm not sure where they can go wrong.

"He's proved that he can do it in the Premier League. He knows what football in this country is about so you don't need to worry about some of the things you need to think about with other players coming in from abroad."

Macari believes United can take advantage of the fact that Modric has not established himself at Real Madrid this season.

"He seems a little unhappy at Real Madrid and he's not a regular in the team," Macari added. "It seems a real possibility that he could join Manchester United.

"The money wouldn't be too outrageous and they could cope with his wages. That is the one name that I see as a possibility.

"I would be quite confident that he could come back to any team in this country and do what he did for Spurs."
