The Chicago Blackhawks clinched the Presidents Trophy on Wednesday night after defeating the Oilers in an emphatic 4-1 victory, but not every other team's playoff hopes are safe, as the Detroit Red Wings and the New York Rangers try to hang on to make the postseason in the eighth spots.
The Rangers have a few games left before the playoffs start next week and will play against Carolina as they try to stay on top of the Jets for the eighth spot. The Rangers have 24 wins and 52 points, while the Jets also have 24 wins, but 51 points. The Penguins are in first place in the Eastern conference, followed by the Boston Bruins and the Washington Capitals as division leaders. The Canadiens are in fourth, followed by the Maple Leafs, Islanders, Senators and Rangers. Last season the Rangers were first in the East but are now in eighth.
In the west the Blackhawks clinched the top seed while the Ducks and Canucks are the division winners behind them. In fourth are the Stanley Cup champion Kings, followed by the Sharks, Blues and Wild before the red Wings in eighth. The red Wings have made the playoffs for basically two decades and are close to missing out.
