Miguel Cabrera Injury: Tigers 3B Suffers Bloody Facial Fracture

Mar 20, 2012 05:57 PM EDT

Miguel Cabrera's injury isn't as serious as one would think even if it did involve a good amount of blood.

According to ESPN's Buster Olney's Twitter account, Cabrera has a small fracture under his right eye (called a non-displaced fracture orbital floor) and needs eight stitches. Nevertheless, the third baseman still has clear vision and said he is likely to be out only a couple of weeks.

Cabrera took a hard-hit grounder from Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Hunter Pence off his face during the bottom of the first inning of a spring training game on Monday. He left the game soon after while bleeding profusely, his jersey covered in blood. Some speculate that Cabrera's sunglasses are actually what the ball hit and caused the cut under his eye.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski said to reporters on Tuesday that there is "no question the sunglasses helped protect Cabrera's eye." He also said that Cabrera won't be doing any activity for a week and will be re-evaluated after that.
