The York Jets made defensive their main focus in the first round of the NFL Draft. Loaded with two picks in the top 15, they walked away with two of the best defensive players in Dee Milliner and Sheldon Richardson. Milliner is the heir to the Darrelle Revis cornerback throne while Richardson will be a big presence on the defensive front. With two big holes filled on that side of the ball, the Jets will set their focus on offensive in the second round. The team is reportedly targeting a cornerback with their second round pick.
The Jets had intended on drafting offense in the first round, but receiver Tavon Austin was drafted on spot ahead of the Jets, leaving the team to take defense instead. They have the eighth (39) pick in the second round and the tenth (72) pick in the third round. One of those draft picks will be used for a quarterback. It is reported that the team will make a run a either Geno Smith or Ryan Nassib if they have the chance.
All but one of the top rated quarterbacks still remain after only E.J. Manuel was drafted on Day 1. The Jets draft fairly close to the top of the second round and will have a chance at either player. At this moment, the Jacksonville Jaguars are fielding interest for the No. 33 pick and the Jets could get in on the negotiations for it. With multiple teams looking for a quarterback upgrade, everyone will try and get their hands on that pick.
The Jets could also consider picking up Matt Barkley. He will still be around if the Jets decide to keep their second round position and he could easily be around during the third round as well. If they do not trade up, both Smith and Nassib will be gone. The Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals all draft ahead of the Jets. All three teams are considered in the market for a quarterback, leaving the Jets with the lesser of the talent in the position.
It has been well-documented that New York is looking for a quarterback upgrade. The team intends on having a roster that will challenge Mark Sanchez for the starting spot. A quarterback in the second round could be that player they are looking for.
