An Australian field hockey player has died after an apparent snake bite from a venomous king brown snake in Australia's tropical Northern Territory.
According to the Washington Post, Karl Berry, 26, was bitten when he picked up the snake to remove it from the Commerce Pints Hockey Club complex in Darwin, Australia.
Not realizing that the snake bite was from a poisonous snake, Berry proceeded on a 1.2 mile training run before collapsing and succumbing to the venomous bite.
Craig Garraway, St. John's Ambulance operation manager, said that Berry was very conscious when paramedics arrived, but took up to 15 minutes to mention the bite. Garraway believes that Berry had a chance to survive, but the training run helped pump the venom around his system at a faster pace than it normally would.
"For 10 to 15 minutes we tried to figure out what he had been doing and he mentioned he had removed a snake off the hockey field and put it into bushes," Garraway said.
