Tottenham forward Gareth Bale completed a double by winning the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year as well as Young Player of the Year awards.

Bale is having a stellar season for Spurs, inspiring them towards a top-four place in the English Premier League.

Since the turn of the year, especially, the Welshman has been by far the standout player of the Premier League, and becomes the first man since Cristiano Ronaldo to win both awards in the same year.

The 23-year-old beat out Luis Suarez for the senior award, with the Liverpool striker coming in second in the voting. Robin Van Persie of Manchester United was third while Michael Carrick, Eden Hazard and Juan Mata were the other shortlisted nominees.

"It's a massive honor," Bale said. "To be voted by your peers is one of the biggest things in the game. It's great to win it and I am delighted.

"When you look at the list, there are some massive names on it but I couldn't have done it without the team. They have been fantastic this year and so has the manager."

Ronaldo was named the Player and Young Player of the Year in 2007, while representing Manchester United, with the only other person to do a double before that being Aston Villa's Andy Gray 30 years ago.

In the Young Player category, Bale, who also won the senior award two years ago, beat out Christian Benteke, while Hazard was third in the voting, with Romelu Lukaku, Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere rounding off the nominations.

PFA chief Gordon Taylor hinted Suarez might have won the award if the Liverpool man could have stayed out of controversies.

"Everyone knows Suarez is a great footballer, I just wish at times he could fall in to line because footballers are role models and Gareth and Robin van Persie are really good examples for the younger generation," he said.

In the women's category, Arsenal midfielder Kim Little walked away with the inaugural PFA Women's Player of the Year award. Arsenal men might not be enjoying a great last few seasons, but the women's side have dominated the English game for a while now.

"It is a great night for me," Little said. "For various years I have watched this event on television so to come here and win the first award is fantastic."
