Tim Tebow and the New York Jets have finalized their divorce and now Tebow is the subject of every signing rumor out there. His drama-filled year in the Big Apple is over and now the real drama begins as everyone speculates where he will land next. The NFL? The CFL? Mayor of Gainesville? It all remains to be seen. As many teams have already shot down the idea that they will be the ones to take a chance on the quarterback, one general manager is not saying no just yet. Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew is not closing the door on Tebow just yet.
Mayhew took time to address the Tebow situation while speaking to a local Detroit radio station. While he did not exactly say the Lions were trying to sign him, he did not shut the door on the idea.
"I feel good about our quarterbacks right now. We've got four on our roster and we typically go with four. But I'm the kind of guy who never says never," Mayhew said.
Now, this could just be Mayhew saying all the right things and trying not to be on the bad side of the Tebow media craze, but when it comes to this player, it does not help to be vague. The Lions are completely set at quarterback with Matthew Stafford, but due to Mayhew's statements, the team could consider bringing on Tebow as another option.
The Lions could be considering moving to more of a read-option offense, something in which Tebow could help with. Stafford is a picture-perfect pocket passer and Tebow is more of a running quarterback. If Detroit feels the need to follow the trend in the NFL, Tebow could ease the transition.
They could also bring him in and switch his position. While Tebow has been adamant about remaining a quarterback in the NFL, switching to a tight end of h-back might be his only option. The Lions drafted Michael Williams to play tight end, so that spot is filled, but if Tebow can show a little versatility, an h-back hybrid might be his best bet.
Anything is possible is Mayhew has the "never say never" attitude. The current senior personnel executive for the Lions, Brain Xanders, was the general manager of the Denver Broncos when they drafted Tebow originally. There is the connection.
