MLB Standings: Red Sox Best Record in Majors, Pittsburgh Pirates Leading Central, Braves Still Best in the N.L. East

Apr 30, 2013 12:42 PM EDT

Todays the official last day of baseball in the month of April and it has been a very surprising month to say the least. Here is what the MLB Standing looks like as we are about to enter a new moth of baseball.

In the A.L. East, the surprising Boston Red Sox have the best record in baseball as they have started the point 18-7. They are currently winners of five straight games, playing great baseball on the road having lost just two of nine games away from Fenway Park. Overall, they are 7-3 in their last 10 ball games. Their pitching has been surprising as Jon Lester, John Lackey and Clay Buchholz are pitching their best baseball in years. Right behind them in the A.L. East are the 15-10 New York Yankees, while the 9-17 Toronto Blue Jays are sitting in last place 9.5 games back.

The A.L. Central has the expected Detroit Tigers in first place as they are streaking winners of four straight. The Kansas City Royals lost first place after losing two straight games, but they are still only half a game back from first.

In the West, the Texas Rangers have been the most consistent team and they took hold of first place after going 7-3 in their last 10 games as the Oakland Athletics struggled to consistently win ball games going 3-7 in 10 games. The Rangers are 16-9, while the A's are 15-12. The Los Angeles Angels are in fourth place with a 9-16 record.

Over in the National League, before even getting to the Atlanta Braves or Colorado Rockies, the true surprise are the Pittsburgh Pirates taking over first place in the N.L. Central. They have also won seven of their last 10 games and are 8-4 at home. They have a half-game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds.

The Braves continue to stay on top in the N.L. East despite only winning 3 of 10 games. They are 16-9 and 7-2 at home. For the Rockies, they have been able to win consistently and are hanging on to a one-game lead over the Arizona Diamondbacks. This division is stacked as the Los Angeles Dodgers are in fourth place trailing the Rockies by 3.5 games.

There are five teams that are already considered to be eliminated. The Blue Jays, the Houston Astros who are the second worst team in baseball and 8.5 games out of first place in the A.L. West. Then there's the Miami Marlins in the N.L. East who have the worst record in baseball at 7-19. These teams might be able to win a couple of consecutive games, but don't expect too much from them this season.
