The New York Jets are in need a big play-making wide receiver. Current wide receiver Santonio Holmes is recovering from injury, leaving the team hopeful that Stephen Hill will have improved in the offseason. Outside of those two, the Jets are struggling at the position. This could leave them to bring back a familiar face in hopes of increasing production. The Jets are reportedly interested in bringing back Braylon Edwards as general manager John Idzik says the door remains open.
The Jets seem to be finished addressing the quarterback position after drafting Geno Smith and releasing Tim Tebow. Now, after missing out on Tavon Austin, they are in need of picking up a few wide receivers in free agency. Edwards is the team's main target. Idzik is considering all options when it comes to the position.
"I know Edwards very well. Guys like that would be under consideration as we go forward, for sure," Idzik said.
Edwards played the 2009 and 2010 seasons for the Jets before playing a year in San Francisco. The Jets re-signed Edwards again. He played three games for New York in 2012 before being released and signing with the Seattle Seahawks. He played 10 games, catching eight passes for 74 yards and one touchdown. While those might not be the exact stats the Jets are looking for in a receiver, Edwards is familiar with the system and the team.
Edwards has a connection in the Jets front office. Idzik was with the Seahawks while Edwards was playing there. That connection could bring him back to the team.
Edwards is not the only option New York is considering for wide receiver. They have had conversations with former New York Giant Ramses Barden. He is currently a free agent after spending four years with the Giants, recording just 29 catches overall. He did have nine catches in one game in 2012. He has not received any interest from other teams which could mean the Jets get him for low cost.
New York has taken care of almost every position but wide receiver. After trading for Chris Ivory, their ground game is set. However, if the team wants Mark Sanchez, or any of their remaining quarterbacks, to succeed then they need to bring in better receiving weapons.
