As the one of the NFL's most popular player continues to look for a job elsewhere, stories have spread across the internet of likely landing places for Tim Tebow, but still sports-business experts wonder if his market value is so far out of reach that'll be hard to recover from, according to the New York Daily News.
"The fall Tebow has taken as a marketing entity over the last 12 months has been dramatic," said Kurt Badenhausen, senior editor at Forbes Media. "It's hard for corporate America to sign endorsement deals with guys we aren't going to see on TV. People don't want to be affiliated with a fringe player."
Although Tebow is still affiliated with several companies, including Jockey and EA, Henry Schafer, executive VP of The Q Scores, the Manhasset-based firm that monitors recognition and appeal of celebrities and athletes, his Q ratings have fallen significantly as a result of "the fiasco with the Jets."
Tebow used to have an awareness rating of 83% among sports fans during the peak of his popularity, but that was after the Broncos playoff win over the Steelers on 2012. During that time he was third behind Tiger Wood and Kobe Bryant.
However, a year later in March of 2013, Tebow Tebow was still known to 82% of sports fans, but his Q Score plummeted to 16% - about typical among athletes, according to Schafer.
Still Schafer has noted that Tebow continues to have significant appeal to the corporate wold, by virtue of his name alone.
"Tim Tebow is different from everybody else in the NFL because he has an incredible level of familiarity," Schafer said. "There's a ton of potential there, but he needs a job."
