The San Diego Chargers are yet another team in the market looking to snag one of the remaining free agent tackles. Bryant McKinnie, Branden Albert, Tyson Clabo and Eric Winston have been making the rounds to teams possibly interested. The Chargers have considered almost every option and have set their sights on McKinnie as the best player for the team. As Philip Rivers enters into a crucial season, he needs the best line to protect him. McKinnie has taken a visit to the team and contract negotiations are now beginning between the two sides.
McKinnie was reportedly impressed with the Chargers and San Diego saying, "It's nice out here, nothing final yet." However, the team is aiming to get serious and sign him before someone else does. The former Baltimore Raven has been offered a contract from the team, but he is still discussing things with Miami who have also been in pursuit of him. McKinnie remained in San Diego after his visit with the team, having dinner with coaches and executives.
McKinnie has battled conditioning problems throughout his career. He has reportedly been working out in South Florida and says that weight is no longer an issue. He started every game for the Ravens during the playoffs. Baltimore has not closed the door on the 33-year old returning to the team, but are waiting to see what kind of offers he receives from other people.
The Chargers are desperate for McKinnie. They have no real backup plan if he does not sign. The team drafted D.J. Fluker to take care of the right side of the line. The only other option they have for the left is King Dunlap.
McKinnie has seen his stock rise since looking impressive during the Ravens' Super Bowl run. He played well against several of the best pass rushers in the league, helping lead Baltimore to the championship. In recent weeks, activity around him has picked up. He is likely to just be waiting to see which team will offer him the most money. Between San Diego, Miami and Baltimore, someone will sign him soon.
