Tim Tebow has yet to hear the word 'yes' from a current NFL coach. As of now, when asked if they are interested in signing the quarterback, almost every coach has said 'no'. The likelihood that Tebow signs with a team in time for the 2013 season seems slimmer by the day. However, while most current coaches are passing on him, one retired coach is showing his support. Former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times that he would take a chance on Tebow is he was still active in the league.
"I think Tebow can play quarterback in the NFL, but whatever offense you run might have to be tweaked a bit. This kid is a talent and he proved it in college. He is an outstanding leader," Ditka wrote in his column for the paper. "Now, does he have an unusual throwing motion? Yes. But there are a lot of quarterbacks that didn't have a perfect throwing motion. Some of them turned out to be great quarterbacks because they were great leaders. I really do think there's a place for him. If not a quarterback, I think he could play tight end. If I was in the league and coaching today, I would take a chance on him at quarterback."
Ditka is right about Tebow having success in college. The former Heisman winner broke numerous records both at Florida and the NCAA all-together. He led the Gators to two BCS National Championships along with being AP Player of the Year and Quarterback of the Year in 2007. He set records that same year for total touchdowns, both rushing and passing. However, Tebow has yet to translate that success into the NFL.
His throwing motion that Ditka mentions has been the brunt of a lot of criticism. He also lacks accuracy when throwing downfield, yet another reason of criticism for the quarterback. Many teams believe there is only so much Tebow can offer unless he agrees to switch positions, something he has yet to agree to.
The New England Patriots are the only team left circulating in the Tebow rumor mill. Bill Belichick would be well-suited to handle the media circus that will likely erupt if a team signs the quarterback. They could get him in as an h-back and creatively open the offense up a little. It is pure speculation at this point, but there is a small chance.
