John Abraham has been patiently waiting for a team to call. He has been sitting on the free agent market for over two months now and has received little to no interest up until this week. After being cut by the Atlanta Falcons for salary cap purposes, the veteran defensive end now has a few teams knocking on his door, one of them being the Falcons. Abraham has been in contact with his former team while the Tennessee Titans are attempting to sign him before anyone else does.
Abraham spent seven years in Atlanta developing a reputation of being a sack specialist. The team has kept in contact with the defensive end about a possible return, something Abraham may or may not be considering. Falcons fans have certainly been pressuring him to come back. Abraham took to Twitter to say, "Y yall keep tweeting me like I did it. I got cut stop asking to come back plz."
So, he is not interested? While no offer has been made from the team, they are asking him to come back but at a much lower salary than Abraham might want. Originally owed $5.75 million in base salary prior to being cut, he would be expected to come back for much lower. Abraham is reportedly receiving a lot of pressure from the Falcons locker room as well to come back to the team.
While Atlanta continues their pursuit of the veteran, the Tennessee Titans are pushing to bring in the veteran as well. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the team has offered Abraham a contract and would like to sign him before the week is over. The Titans are no stranger to Abraham. They originally were after him last season before he ultimately decided to remain with the Falcons.
With current pass rushers in Derrick Morgan and Kamerion Wimbley, Abraham would likely come in as a third-down guy for pass rushing only. That would be a perfect fit for the aging defensive end. While still able to play well on the field, Abraham has seen a drop in production over recent years.
If the Titans do not make a move soon, the Falcons could possibly step in and try and re-sign him. Abraham has also receiver interest from the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos.
