The Phoenix Suns fired general manager Lance Blanks at the beginning of the team's offseason after another disappointing finish in 2013. While they are in the process of discussing options to fill the roll, they are waiting for a few things to iron out before making a decision. The team like possible candidates Jeff Weltman and Ryan McDonough, but there is one more option they are waiting to hear from. So, who is holding up the hire? Grant Hill. As the former Suns great mulls his future, Phoenix is hoping he returns in the role of new general manager.
Phoenix has already interviewed Weltman and McDonough. They are reportedly satisfied with either option, but their main target is Hill. It has been speculated that Hill will be retiring this season. Now that the Los Angeles Clippers have been eliminated from the postseason, he can make a decision one way or the other. Now 40-years old, Hill saw action in just 29 games this season, averaging just 3.2 points per game. He suffered a wide range of injuries and was just simply benched for more effective players. It was the first time in his career that he his points average was in single digits. He could return for his 19th season, but is expected to simply walk away from the game.
If and when Hill does retire, he will have plenty of jobs waiting for him. The Duke alum would likely take a front office job or become a commentator. The Phoenix Suns are hoping he moves to the front office. Is Hill a legitimate candidate to become a full-time general manager? He did spend five years with the Suns, making that a likely landing spot. He has made a lot of friends in their front office. The Suns had briefly considered bringing him in back in February and are now serious about him taking the leap.
Hill is currently signed to a two-year deal with the Clippers, but only the first year was guaranteed. With his performance this season, staying with the team might now be an option. Grant has had two knee surgeries and his comeback from them has not gone well. His former agent, Lon Babby is currently in charge of basketball operations in Phoenix and has voiced his support of Hill joining to front office of team. The idea does not seem so crazy now.
