It was a two-RBI single off the bat of Desmond Jennings that ended smashing off Toronto Blue Jays' pitcher J.A. Happ's head in their second game of a three-game series in Tampa Bay. The Rays fans cheered after the solid contact made by their outfielder, but the "Oh's!" quickly rang around the park as the players and crowd awaited in silence.
Happ was carted off in a stretcher as he was unable to walk off under his own power. The Blue Jays and Rays staff attended the lefty who was rocked by Jennings in the second inning. He lasted just 1.1 innings while giving up four earned runs as the Rays led 4-1. Happ had just thrown 43 pitches in the game.
Everybody watched attentively as the pitcher stayed on the ground. He laid behind the mound clutching his head as he was being tended to. Teammates circled the mound while Jennings stood at third base with his hands on his head biting the top of his jersey.
This is the second time a Blue Jays player suffers a freak accident. First, it was Jose Reyes with an awkward slide in Kansas City. He's currently recovering from a bad ankle. Now, the Blue Jays' pitching staff takes a hit as Happ, a lefty, will be out indefinitely as no word on his status has been reported.
Happ is 2-2 in 2013 with a 4.91 ERA. Though his numbers aren't incredible, he is one of the better pitchers in this Blue Jays pitching staff.
