With Manchester United and their fans still reeling from the news of Sir Alex Ferguson's decision to retire at the end of the season, there could be plenty more changes with Wayne Rooney now set to leave Old Trafford and Cristiano Ronaldo set for a possible return.
Ferguson stunned the world by announcing his decision to retire as United manager, just a few days after he had insisted he would like to stay for a couple more years.
However, exits of high-profile United personnel might not end there with Rooney reportedly telling Ferguson of his desire to leave the English Premier League champions at the end of the season.
Ferguson had rejected that request from the England international, but with the Scot now set to move onto the board, Rooney could yet leave the club he has been with since 2004.
The former Everton striker has been frustrated by his role and lack of playing time at United this season, and asked Ferguson to allow him to leave for a fresh start elsewhere, according to widespread reports in the British press. Ferguson denied Rooney the request, saying he would have to stay and honor the remaining two years of his contract.
David Moyes, the manager that brought Rooney on at Everton, is expected to be named as Ferguson's replacement, and will be faced with the task of persuading the 27-year-old to stay at Old Trafford beyond this summer.
A United spokesman insisted Wednesday night, "Wayne Rooney is not for sale."
Rooney has caught the eye of Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich, with Chelsea now joining the list.
Bayern are thought to be seriously interested in bringing the England international to the Allianz Arena, with Pep Guardiola, who will take over at Bayern from next season, reportedly a big admirer.
Chelsea, though, are also determined to fight it out for Rooney's signature, with Roman Abramovich sanctioning a £30 million ($46 million) move, after Jose Mourinho, expected to be named Chelsea manager soon, reportedly asking the Russian owner to do all it takes to bring in Rooney to Stamford Bridge.
Meanwhile, if Rooney does depart, a certain superstar's arrival could certainly ease the pain considerably, with chief executive David Gill reportedly holding talks with Ronaldo's agent Jorge Mendes over a summer move for the United favorite, according to the Daily Mail.
Ronaldo has previously refused to commit his future to Real Madrid, and if Gill can persuade Ronaldo to return to Old Trafford, even without his mentor Ferguson at the helm, it will be seen as a major coup and a real statement of intent from United ahead of the next season.
