New York Jets Rumors: Santonio Holmes Says Mark Sanchez Starting Quarterback Not Geno Smith, Supports Rex Ryan as Head Coach

May 09, 2013 09:45 AM EDT

The number of people in Mark Sanchez's corner is few and far between. While the New York Jets have come out in support of their quarterback, they are not prepared to name him the future of the franchise. It is no secret that the Jets are about to begin a well-publicized quarterback competition and not too many people are hoping Sanchez comes out the winner. However, he does have one person supporting him through this circus. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes believes Sanchez is the starter until further notice.

While the Jets are stating that the starting quarterback will be named based on competition, Holmes believes the winner has already been crowned. The Jets receiver told NBC Sports Network that Sanchez is the No. 1 guy, despite the other quarterbacks on the roster.

"Right now Sanchez and that's who we're going with and we're going to continue this road until time permits," Holmes said when asked to name a starter.

Holmes believes that Sanchez is the leader of the team and he acts the part well. He said the quarterback is focused on being himself and doing his job well. Holmes noted that he and Sanchez are working to learn a new offense from coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

Sanchez was not the only Jets member that Holmes voiced his support for. Head coach Rex Ryan has not exactly fared well in the whole media circus that has become the New York Jets. He has taken the brunt of most of the poor efforts from the Jets last season. Holmes supported his coach and the things he is doing with the team.

"I love this guy and this attitude and beliefs about winning ball games and what it takes and bringing the right people around. He's a young head coach whose been given an opportunity regardless of how many years as a defensive coordinator or just as a coach. Learning as time progresses for him and he's building his team the way he wants it built," Holmes said.

Holmes was upset that the team ultimately traded away cornerback Darrelle Revis, a move that shocked Holmes. While the Jets performance on the field has been less than stellar in recent years, Holmes still believes in the team and the year they can have in 2013.
