The world of wrestling has received good news as reports indicate that Jerry "the King" Lawler, the pro wrestler who experienced a heart attack in September during a live taping of "Monday Night Raw" and was clinically dead for about five minutes before being resuscitated, has been cleared by doctors and is set to return to the ring May 25.
"The one thing I've not done since the heart attack is get back into the ring and wrestle," Lawler told WMC-TV in February. "And, Lauryn [Lawler's girlfriend] says that I've been the one thing that's different about me since the heart attack, she says, 'You're depressed. You're going through depression.' Which I don't feel it. I don't think it. But, yeah, I certainly do miss the wrestling and I do want to go back and do it some more."
According to the Los Angeles Times, Lawler,63, will make his first appearance since his heart attack scare in a tag team match where he'll team up with Dory Funk Jr., 72, in a match for the Bang wrestling promotion.
The night of his attack, Lawler was commentating on a match in September when he passed out on the spot and began making snoring noises. He fellow ringside commentator, Michael Cole, alerted doctors, who immediately began performing CPR. Lawler was immediately carried backstage while the show was still live, and it took almost five minutes for medical personnel to get his heart pumping on its own.
Lawler was then required to have two stents placed in the arteries around his heart, and later made a astonishing recovery and returned ringside during "Monday Night Raw" just two months later.
Lawler's longtime Monday Night Raw broadcast partner Jim Ross said in his blog that he is happy to see is friend get back to doing what he loves.
"Obviously, King's cardiologist has been consulted one would assume on this matter. Jerry had much rather wrestle than announce any day and he's getting back in the ring north of 60 years of age because he loves it and not because he needs the cash. I wish him the best as always."
