Washington Nationals' Jayson Werth is scheduled to undergo an MRI scan on his balky right hamstring on Thursday, according to the Washington Post.
The news of the upcoming scan was first made public by Nationals manager Davey Johnson following Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. Werth, who hasn't played in six days due to the soreness and tightness, will also be further examined by an internist because the outfielder has been dealing with a stomach virus that could be contributing to hydration and muscle cramping.
Werth has been battling the stomach ailment for about a week now, Johnson said, and the fluid loss cound be a contributing cause for the cramping. Even though he was cleared by his personal doctor, the team doctor for the Nationals, Wiemi Douogui, to an extra precaution to make another examination of Werth prior to Wednesday's game.
Werth was put through test by team trainer Lee Kuntz and "ran pretty good," according to Johnson/ However, when Werth finished, "he started getting some muscle spasms," Johnson added. "So he was obviously getting dehydrated."
Johnson never considered the new development as being a setback, with he and the Nationals in the belief that the hamstring was simply minor tightness. Earlier in the day, Johnson reiterated that Werth wasn't headed to the disabled list.
"I have a good feeling if they can get rid of the bug he'll be alright," Johnson said.
