Jay Cutler loves the Bears and apparently the Bears love Jay Cutler. As a new coaching staff steps in to take hold of the Chicago Bears in 2013, the quarterback is getting plenty of praise thrown his way. The Bears have just kicked off organized team activities and already the coaches are onboard the Cutler train. Quarterback coach Matt Cavanaugh is loving what he is setting from his starter so far this season.
"Very impressed with Jay. Very impressed. He's borderline football brilliant. I think he gets it. I think he knows the game. I think he knows the offensive schemes. I think he knows the defenses," Cavanaugh said.
Cutler will begin the season learning a new offense from Chicago's new coaching staff. Cavanaugh said the quarterback is picking things up very quickly and understanding the new approach of the team.
"I think he's embracing how we want to approach things. There has been a lot of give and take. We didn't come in here and mandate that this is exactly how we're doing it and there is no leeway. We wanted his feedback. He's been willing to do that. It's a good working relationship now."
With a new coaching staff come many new things other than just a different playbook. The Bears are installing a different way to evaluate quarterbacks, a helmet camera. Chicago debuted the new training method during rookie minicamp. They are using cameras to help track what the quarterback is seeing and how they are viewing the play developing. The coaching staff is hopeful this will increase quarterback growth and progression and will eventually be a great learning tool for years to come.
Cutler is entering the final year of his contract and will need to show some growth in order to earn an extension. Many believe this is a make-it-or-break-it year for Cutler. If he does not improve, the Bears will likely not retain him for 2014. Cavanaugh speaking out in support of Cutler is a good sign of his status with the team. However, it is only May and things could change once games begin to get going.
