The divorce between the Green Bay Packers and quarterback Brett Favre was not exactly amicable. Favre left the team angry and only recently has he begun to move past those feelings of hate for a franchise that helped build his Hall of Fame career. Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy is hopeful that the two sides can mend their relationship.
Murphy told FoxSportsWisconsin.com that he is hopeful Favre comes back to the team saying, "We want to have Favre back in the family." Murphy had said last year they were hopeful to retire Favre's famous No. 4 jersey but noted that it was not the right time for the ceremony to happen.
The relationship between the team and the quarterback has been frail since 2008 when the Packers traded Favre away. The quarterback at one point said he felt like he was forced into retirement too soon and was not ready to leave the game just yet. The quarterback had come back from retirement and instead of playing with Green Bay, the team sent him packing to the New York Jets. They decided to move on with Aaron Rodgers as their future quarterback and were moving on from the Favre era. A season later, Favre signed with the Minnesota Vikings, making the relationship between the two sides even worse.
Favre told ESPN during last season that he has started to move past the hard feelings he has towards the Packers organization where he won three MVP awards and one Super Bowl title. Does this mean he is ready to move back into the organization in some capacity? That remains to be seen and it is unclear what kind of role Murphy would like Favre to have with the team.
Recently, Favre and Rodgers made a joint appearance at the NFL Honors show, taking a step forward in repairing their relationship. The awkward handshake between the two was a big moment according to Murphy.
"We don't need to shake hands and move on. I think in some ways that has happened...Even though it's a shame the way things went down between I and the Packers, as time goes by, it's like a grudge...you just kind of get over it, you know?"
