The inevitable finally became reality with Chelsea announcing an agreement with Frank Lampard over a one-year contract extension, which will keep the midfielder at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2014.

A saga that has run through the season finally ended with the veteran midfielder getting his wish to remain at Chelsea, through sheer force of his will courtesy some outstanding performances, and the unending support from the Chelsea faithful.

Lampard was widely expected to leave Chelsea a few months back, with L.A. Galaxy looking like the most likely destination.

However, once the midfielder became the club's all-time leading goalscorer, beating Bobby Tambling's record of 202 goals, with a brace against Aston Villa, it became almost impossible for the Chelsea hierarchy to ignore the midfielder's wishes.

Lampard admitted after Chelsea's Europa League final that a deal was close, and on Thursday, the new Europa League champions confirmed a one-year contract had been agreed.

"Chelsea Football Club is delighted to announce Frank Lampard has signed a one-year extension to his contract," the club said in a statement on their website.

"Already the third-highest appearance-maker in the club's history, next season will be the vice-captain's 13th at Stamford Bridge."

"Frank has been an important player for Chelsea Football Club for a long time and has played a significant part in the club's success," Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay added.

"We have been talking to him since the end of last year and our discussions have been entirely positive throughout.

"We are delighted we are now announcing an extension to his contract which will keep him at the club until 2014."

Lampard always wanted to remain at Stamford Bridge, and it is believed Jose Mourinho, who is expected to take over at Chelsea next season, might have played a huge part in making the decision for the Chelsea board.

"I'm absolutely delighted," Lampard said. "Everybody knows I always maintained the dream was to stay at Chelsea. We've been talking for ages and even though it went on for quite a period, it was always amicable.

"I want to thank Mr. Abramovich for everything he's done in making the dream a reality. I love this club, the staff, the players and especially the supporters, who have treated me fantastically since the day I arrived.

"The thought of helping the club to more success in the forthcoming years is all I ever wanted. I couldn't be happier."
