As the Charles Woodson rumor mill continues on with new rumors each day, the New York Giants have stepped up as one of the leading franchises in the Woodson sweepstakes.
The Giants have expressed their initial interest in Woodson earlier in his free agency since being released by the Green Bay Packers. They're currently waiting to see if Woodson's health checks out, and would be interested in signing him for the veteran's minimum.
Currently the Giants have Antrel Rolle and Stevie Brown as their starting safeties. Will Hill, their fifth-round pick Cooper Taylor, Ryan Mundy and Tyler Sash are all also currently listed on their roster.
Woodson, 36, would be an interesting addition to the Giants roster as he'll provide them with veteran leadership presence at safety and he'll help fill the void left by Kenny Phillips' departure to the Philadelphia Eagles due to free agency.
Woodson hasn't attracted much interest from other teams, but has garnered the attention of the San Francisco 49ers, Carolina Panthers and Oakland Raiders as he visited around the league this week. He reportedly also made a trip to visit with the Denver Broncos, however, he left without a contract offer.
The Giants have also expressed their interest in free-agent running back Tim Hightower.
Hightower, 26, the once-promising back who totaled 23 touchdowns in his first three seasons, hasn't played in the NFL since tearing his ACL in Oct., 2011.
If he passes a physical and workout with the Giants, it's possible he could receive an invitation to attend the Giants "rookie camp" on May 10-11, where veterans trying to keep their careers alive are often invited.
If everything pans out for the better, Hightower may be too good to pass up by the Giants. He was a standout part-time running back with the Arizona Cardinals from 2008-2010, but was traded to the Redskins in exchange for defensive end Vonnie Holiday and a draft pick before the 2011 season. He later won the starting job that year in training camp.
