NFL Free Agent Rumors: Dwight Freeney Visits With The San Diego Chargers, Leaves Without A Contract Offer

May 17, 2013 10:02 AM EDT

Just days after San Diego outside linebacker Melvin Ingram tore his ACL; they've recently met with former Indianapolis Colts defensive end Dwight Freeney on Wednesday.

According to CBS Sports, the visit included a physical and extended well into Thursday.

However, the free agent DE left San Diego without having signed a contract, as outside linebacker Thomas Keiser was instead chosen and was the one to ink a deal.

Despite the recent signing, however, the Chargers still have interest in adding Freeney to their roster, and may have an advantage in signing him given that GM Tom Telesco spent the previous 15 years working with the Colts' personnel department.

Freeney would surely help the Chargers in terms of ball pressure and rush effectiveness as that has become their No.1 priority this week after Ingram's torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Though tallying 107.5 career sacks is impressive and speaks for itself, the Chargers are likely to not offer Freeney a large sum of money that he's received in the past. At the age of 33, the Chargers are likely to offer him the veteran's minimum.

The Chargers currently have around $6.2 million in cap space, which might be just enough to squeeze in Freeney but would leave nothing left over for later.

The addition of Freeney is a risk in itself, but may prove beneficial for them long term as he can possible help keep them from getting embarrassed by the Denver Broncos or any other team with a solid QB.
