Boston Red Sox News And Rumors: Shane Victorino Reinjures Back, How Much Time Will He Miss?

May 17, 2013 11:17 AM EDT

After several stellar catches in the Boston Red Sox 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday, right fielder Shane Victorino injured his back and may miss significant time.

In the eighth inning Victorino chased down Jose Labaton's line drive ball but crashed into the fence in right-center, a play that caused his shaky back to flare up. Then, after nearly making a sensational sliding catch in foul territory, he grabbed a Desmond Jennings' shot to the warning track with an over-the-shoulder grab.

The injury to his back, however, caused Victorino to leave the game in the ninth inning when his back locked up, but he remains hopeful of being able to play in Friday's game against the Minnesota Twins.

"I don't think it's going to be as bad," Victorino said. "It doesn't feel that way. At least I'm hoping that."

However, regardless of the injury, Victorino plans to continue his aggressive playing style and shows no signs of letting up.

"There's only one way to play, you know?" he said. "Try to play the game hard, make as many outs as you can. Sometimes in the process you aggravate things, but I feel OK. Just got to keep plugging."
