Atletico Madrid stunned Real Madrid 2-1 after extra time in the Copa Del Rey final, in an explosive clash between the two Madrid rivals that saw both Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho sent off.
The passion went over the line on a few occasions in the game at the Bernabeu, which saw Ronaldo open the scoring for Real early, before Diego Costa made it 1-1 with ten minutes remaining in the first half.
The scores remained the same until full time, but there was time for drama before that even of not via goals.
Mourinho was sent of upstairs for furiously protesting a decision 15 minutes from normal time. Things did not get any better when Miranda made it 2-1 for Atletico in the 99th minute of the match.
Just when it looked like it really could not get any worse for the home side, Ronaldo was given his marching orders for lashing out at Atletico skipper Gabi in the second half of extra time.
That sending off almost cleared the benches with substitutes and coaches brawling on the side of the pitch as Ronaldo was trudging off.
Real Madrid had been a tad unlucky to not score a second goal, hitting the post on three occasions, with the match descending into further chaos in the final moments as Atletico goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was hit by an object thrown from the crowd before Gabi was given a second yellow card for time wasting right at the death.
But, Real just could not find the equalizer in stoppage time either, leaving the Atletico fans to celebrate their 10th Copa Del Rey triumph, and their first win over their rivals in 14 years, while Real contemplated a season without a single piece of major silverware.
"When the score was 1-1 and you hit the post three times you do not need to be a footballing genius to realise that it is not normal," Mourinho said. "If at least one of those three shots had gone in we'd have won the match.
"I think we should have won the match inside 90 minutes, but we did not manage that and then they scored in extra time, we had two clear chances for (Gonzalo) Higuain and (Mesut) Ozil. It is not the result we deserved, but that's the way it is.
"In football everything is forgotten about, refereeing, hitting the post ... The history books will remember the winner and that is Atletico."
