West Brom vs Manchester United Results: Sir Alex Ferguson Salutes Fans After Incredible 5-5 Result in Manager's Final Game

In a way, it was a fitting finale for Sir Alex Ferguson. A match which ebbed and flowed one way and then the other, with for once, the opponents - in this case West Brom - scoring a late equalizer to eke out a point in a crazy 5-5 draw against Manchester United on the last day of the English Premier League.

Ferguson will remember the 2-1 win over Swansea in his final home game more fondly, with the send-off that he received and the trophy presentation - his 13th Premier League title to be in his memory for a long long time.

However, this game had all the ingredients of what has stood out in the Premier League era, so utterly dominated by Manchester United and the immovable Ferguson.

It was end-to-end stuff with neither team concerned too much about the art of defending.

Manchester United were seemingly in control, taking a 3-0 lead through Shinji Kagawa, Jonas Olsson (OG) and Alexander Buttner. But West Brom came roaring back courtesy James Morrison and Romelu Lukaku, before Robin Van Persie and Javier Hernandez seemingly put the game to bed at 5-2.

However, there was one final twist in the tale with Lukaku grabbing two more to complete his hat-trick and Youssouf Mulumbu scoring the other to ensure the game ended 5-5, an incredible scoreline if you put this into perspective - United have scored 2,769 goal under Ferguson over nearly 27 years, but this was the first time they drew a match 5-5 since the one against Lincoln way way back in 1895.

Ferguson, who admitted to being emotional, made an immediate beeline to the away fans at the Hawthorns right after the final whistle, thanking them for their support over 27 successful years, with the manager even personally bowing before the crowd, showing just how much he has appreciated the support.

It was also the final game for United legend Paul Scholes, who came on as a second half substitute; but as has always been the case, the midfielder gracefully walked out of the game with little fanfare and attention - just the way he likes it.

There will never be another Ferguson, of course, as the most successful British manager of all-time now contemplates sitting in the director's box and fuming at refereeing decisions and celebrating last-minute goals of his beloved Manchester United.
