Indy 500 Starting Grid: 97th Running Of 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing' At Indianapolis Motor Speedway Sunday Has Ed Carpenter On Pole For 33-Car Lineup May 26

May 20, 2013 11:45 AM EDT

The Indy 500 is all set after the 33-car starting grid was finalized over the weekend and after Ed Carpenter won the pole earlier in the week, as Josef Newgarden and Graham Rahal made it into the final set after missing out on the first 24 places, putting together the fastest runs ni Bump Day in Indianapolis.

The nine drivers who took part and had to work on the second day made the 33-car field and now Carpenter will start first ahead of Carlos Munoz, Marco Andretti, E.J. Viso and AL Allmendinger in the top five. Will Power, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Helio Castroneves, James Hinchcliffe and JR Hildebrand finish out the top 10 for Sunday's big race. Indiana is having a big week in the sports world, as the Indy 500 is gearing up and the Pacers are also in the postseason in the Eastern conference finals against the Miami Heat.

Power will be in a good position after coming in as the favorite but he might be better off as he has won 21 poles and 14 races over the past three years after finishing second in points and he will be primed for a good run on Sunday. Newgarden had the best run on Sunday with a 225.731 mph run, while  Alex Tagliani, who won the pole back in 2011, will start 11th in the middle of row 4 and Rahal will have the No. 26 spot on row 9 for the race. Both Dario Franchitti and Helio Castroneves are looking for their fourth titles in their careers, while Munoz will be the first rookie to get a start on the front row while Daly is the youngest rookie to start the race,. Danica Patrick was asked months ago about running, but she decided not to participate.

The Indy 500 is running for the 97th time on May 26th on Sunday at 11:00 AM with a 33-car starting field and "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing" will have the drivers going 500 miles around 200 laps on the 2.5 mile track. It is the biggest  spectator event in North America and is the top race of the  IZOD IndyCar Series. The race has been run each year since 1911 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
