Josh Portis Released By Seattle Seahawks After DUI Arrest Gives Tim Tebow A Chance To Join Roster And Take Negative Media Attention Away From Pete Carroll?

May 21, 2013 01:56 PM EDT

The arrest of backup quarterback Josh Portis has resulted in his released, according to CBS Sports, and now the Seahawks will likely bring in another quarterback to fill his roster and one intriguing option could be Tim Tebow, as he could take some of the negative attention off of head coach Pete Carroll after the arrest and Bruce Irvin's suspension.

Tebow is still a free agent and his squeaky clean image could be something that the Seahawks are interested in and since it isn't a major market there is a chance that the media attention wouldn't be as psychotic as it is in other places. Russell Wilson is the locked in starter and he could help bring a nice positive influence to the roster depending on what the team would want.

Portis was taken in on May 5 and will be arraigned on May 28 for his arrest, for which he was driving over 80 mph when pulled over in a 60 mph zone and he was tested with blood alcohol concentration readings of .092 and .078, while the legal limit is .080. Portis was charged with a charged with a gross misdemeanor and the officers noticed that he had an odor and bloodshot eyes.

The defense is a key part of the team and the loss of Irvin may hurt, but not too much, as the team already signed Cliff Avril, Tony McDaniel and Michael Bennett in the offseason after dealing with an injury to Chris Clemons. Irvin had some character issues coming out of college but the Seahawks took him anyway and this may be a consequence of that. The team is ready to make a big run with Russell Wilson and they also acquired Percy Harvin in a trade.

Irvin became the fifth player suspended for PED use on the team over the past three years, the most in the league, and adding to it was backup quarterback Josh Portis being arrested for suspicion of DUI. Portis was arrested on May 5 for driving under the influence and was caught going 80 in a 60 mph zone.

Portis was signed to a two year contract in April and he was expected to compete for the position. He played on the roster in 2011 and was on the practice squad last year. The team is starting organized activities this week and Portis could miss out on some prime workouts. The Seahawks are a sexy Super Bowl pick after trading for Percy Harvin and signing Cliff Avril and maybe now Tebow can get into the fold due to the arrest. After having five players suspended over the past two years, there is a chance that the Seahawks may want to change things up and swapping in Tebow for Portis would do just that.

The arrest took place before 9:30 pm on the day in question exiting the Mount Baker Tunnel on eastbound I-90 in a 2008 Range Rover and Portis was expected to compete for the backup position with Brady Quinn and Jerrod Johnson, but now maybe Pete Carroll and jump out of the box and bring in someone like Tebow for a workout or a roster spot.
