Arsenal Transfer News: Ljungberg Unhappy with Players Celebrating Top-Four Finish, Wants Gunners to Spend in the Summer

Former Arsenal midfielder Freddie Ljungberg, a major piece of the "Invincibles" side is the latest player to give his two cents over the club's current situation while imploring the English Premier League team to spend some money on quality players in the summer.

Ljungberg knows all about winning with Arsenal, having enjoyed an extremely successful nine-year spell with the club.

The Swede could not quite understand the Arsenal players' over-the-top celebrations after securing a top-four place in the Premier League with the 1-0 win over Newcastle, saying a season at Arsenal cannot be deemed successful if they don't win at least one trophy.

"I'm not too happy that they celebrated (finishing in the top four)," the 36-year-old told The Telegraph.

"How I see the club is different, I'm from the old school and Pat Rice said to me if you don't win a trophy every year it is a big failure.

"It's a bit different now and they have all the debt from the new stadium and we will have to see what happens this summer -- hopefully they will have a better team next year."

Ljungberg acknowledged the great work being done by Arsene Wenger, who has seen one top player after another leave the club every season, but also implored Arsenal to buy top-quality players in the transfer window as he believes they are not as far behind their rivals as some might believe.

"I think they have the foundations, but maybe they need to get some very good players to spice it up a little bit," he added.

"It's hard for any team if you let your best players go every year. It's not even possible to compete to win then, and Arsene Wenger has done really well with the squad he has."

The Gunners have been tipped to spend big in the summer with Wenger reportedly given at least £70 million ($105 million) to bring in new recruits.

The likes of Stevan Jovetic, Ashley Williams, David Villa, and Gonzalo Higuain have been linked with moves and it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will finally invest some money on new and proven players or whether it will prove to be a false dawn yet again.
