Cullen Finnerty was one of the winningest quarterbacks in college football while playing at Grand Valley State University and after a three day search, his body was found in the Michigan woods with no answers about how he died.
According to the Associated Press, the 30-year-old went missing for three days after fishing near his family's cottage in the woods and his body was later found around a mile from where he disappeared. The report says that no foul play has been suspected but that they will use an autopsy to see what he died from. Finnerty won three Division II titles while at school and had over 50 wins during his time in his four years as a starter in Allendale, Mich.
Police said the body was found in a wooded area and that the search was aided along by police and volunteers, including staff and players from Grand Valley State where he went to school. According to the report, Finnerty may have been having a mental episode and was afraid of something and that the police were able to track his cell phone "until it went dead."
Finnerty previously was a high school star and Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly coached the quarterback when the team won in 2003.
"It's very chilling," Kelly said Tuesday, before Finnerty's body was found. "He led me to a national championship as a true freshman. When I left, coach Martin took over and won two more national championships. My heart goes out to the family and to his beautiful wife."
