After rain played a major part in disrupting the schedule of the French Open Thursday, the likes of Roger Federer and Serena Williams will be joined by Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal, who was not even able to get on court for his second round match, when play resumes on Friday.
Nadal was scheduled to play Martin Klizan in the second round on Thursday, but will now go out on court for the first match Friday at Suzanne Lenglen.
The Spaniard will be hoping for an easier outing than the one against Daniel Brands in the first round, with clay court specialist Fabio Fognini awaiting Nadal in the third round.
Sharapova is not expected to spend too much time on court on Friday, with the defending champion already leading 6-2, 4-2 in her match against Eugenie Bouchard.
There will, however, be a tricky encounter awaiting Williams, who faces 26th seed Sorana Cirstea of Romania in her third round match. The American was at her ruthless best against Caroline Garcia in the previous round, coasting to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the Frenchwoman.
"I knew she would play well and I knew I had to," she told reporters after her second round match. "I thought I came out strong, and did what I had to do to make it to the next level."
Federer will have to be at his best to advance past the third round with home favorite Julien Benneteau waiting to clip the Swiss master's wings at the slightest of opportunities.
The 17-time Grand Slam champion is bidding for his second French Open title and his third round opponent, seeded 30, will definitely not make it easy, with the crowd also likely to be behind Benneteau.
