MLB Standings: Yanks Dip to Third, First Place Teams Gaining Momentum?

Jun 03, 2013 11:39 AM EDT

The MLB Standings finally see consistency as all the first place teams have remained atop of their division in the past week of baseball. With the conclusion of May and the beginning of June, here is the latest from the standings with one of the more surprising teams in the league finally taking a seat in the background.

Not only is it raining in New York, but along with the terrible weather, it was a terrible week of baseball for the Yankees. The New York Mets swept the Yankees in four straight games, two in Citi Field and two in Yankee Stadium. Then, to make things worse, just when it looked the Yanks were getting back on the right track, the Red Sox took two games from them over the weekend. As a result, the Yankees are now in third place in the A.L. East looking up at the first place Sox and second place Baltimore Orioles.

A.L. East- Boston Red Sox (35-23)
They have won 7 of 10 and are one of the hottest teams in the league. Over the weekend, they pounded the Yankees allowing just five runs while scoring 15 times in their three-game series. With solid pitching and timely offense, the Red Sox are on a bit of a groove and they will look to distance themselves further from the rest of the pack in the East.

A.L. Central- Detroit Tigers (30-25)
The Tigers have barely been able to stay in first place. They only reason why they are in first place is because the Cleveland Indians have managed to play worse in the past couple of games. The Tigers are only .5 games up in the division and a surprisingly hot Minnesota Twins team is playing really well. The Tigers and Indians will have to watch their backs.

A.L. West- Texas Rangers (35-21)
They are the best team in the American League. Yu Darvish has dazzled in the first two months of the season, while  carrying the starting rotation. However, the Rangers can't get comfortable because the hottest team in baseball are the Oakland Athletics and they are just two games back from first place. The A's are 9-1 in their past 10 games and they are once again doing it quietly in the West.

N.L. East - Atlanta Braves (34-22)
The Braves started the month of May poorly, but closed in decent fashion going 13-4. They now lead the Washington Nationals by 6.5 games and are enjoying their biggest division lead. Maybe the Braves learned their lesson last year and would prefer to avoid the N.L. Wild Card Game.

N.L. Central- St. Louis Cardinals (37-19
This has to be the toughest division in baseball, while there are four teams in the A.L. East with winning records, there are three teams in this division, not only with winning records, but with records 10-games over .500.

The Cardinals are in command with the best record in baseball, but the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates are just behind by 2.5 games. Had the Reds and Pirates played in any other division in baseball, they could have easily been in first place.

The Cardinals' pitching is absolutely terrifying and with their mix of veterans, they are bound to make a World Series run in 2013.

N.L. West
The Arizona Diamondbacks are shocking plenty. They are up on both the San Francisco Giants and the Colorado Rockies by 2.5 games. The D'Backs are 6-4 in their last 10 perfectly splitting their road and home record at 16-12. If they can develop more consistency at home, then the D'Backs could really be a terrifying ball club as Paul Goldschmidt is really making a name for himself.
