The Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League has had some connections with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL recently, as wide receivers Mike Williams and Reggie Williams joined the team at different points and now that has continued, as the franchise signed quarterback Josh Portis.
According to Pro Football Talk, Portis joined the Toronto roster over the weekend after being waived by the Seattle Seahawks last month. Portis was serving as a backup quarterback option behind Russell Wilson heading into training camp, but he was released and waived after being arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence. Portis has a history with the team, as he was signed earlier in the year in March and left after signing with the Seahawks in April.
Portis has been in the NFL with the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent for the last two seasons and he was re-signed in April along with Brady Quinn to backup Russell Wilson. Portis now joins a roster that has four other quarterbacks and the CFL season starts off in just over a week, meaning he could be in line for a spot since they already have a history with him. Mike Williams was recently signed and was then released by the team and now Portis will join after being arrested and reportedly having a .092 blooc alcohol level.
The Seahawks released him the day after he was arrested and now Portis will move on to the CFL after spending time at Maryland and Division II California University of Pennsylvania in college. Portis has experience on the practice squad for the Seahawks and would have had the chance to be the backup this season for Russell Wilson and he joins a roster that also has last year's starter for Toronto in Ricky Ray. While Tim Tebow is a much bigger name than Portis is, the move to the Canadian Football League north of the border is something that he should consider if he wants to continue playing football.
Tebow has been blackballed by teams in the NFL not because of his talent or his ability to win, but by the media hype and presence he brings, something most NFL teams do not want to deal with in the locker room. Tebow proved he could win in Denver, but after signing Peyton Manning the team decided to trade him to the New York Jets. Tebow had a lost season in 2012 and he ended up with 102 yards rushing and 39 in the air with zero touchdowns and the team never figured out how to use him in the offense. There have been reports that people in Tebow's camp think his career is over, while his father and likely the quarterback himself think that is not true. Tebow has received legitimate offers from the CFL and the AFL and while those may seem like steps down for the quarterback, it might be a good idea to work on some things while playing for a season and letting the NFL media hype machine die down.
