The New York Jets are in need of playmakers for 2013. As the team's quarterback competition carries on, the team needs set weapons in place to help whoever is under center. With the future of running back Mike Goodson uncertain, the Jets will depend on wide receivers to help carry the load. They could be down one when the season begins as Santonio Holmes is still not healthy.
Head coach Rex Ryan told media on Wednesday that a decision on when Holmes will get back on the football field has not been decided year. Back in February, Holmes was still sporting a walking boot after having additional surgery on his injured left foot. A metal plate had to be removed that was originally placed to help in his recovery. Doctors believed he could be running by April, but that seems to not have happened.
According to the head coach, things have not been very clear about Holmes' healthy. While Ryan says the wide receiver is making progress in rehabbing his foot, but things are not moving as quickly as originally assumed.
"He's doing a decent job, but we'll see how he is in training camp. There's a possibility he starts out on the PUP, I'm not sure, but he seems to be doing well," Ryan said.
Placing Holmes on PUP list in certainly not ideal for the Jets, especially since he is 10 months out from the original injury. Without Holmes, the receiving corps is severely unimpressive and they will need him back at 100 percent.
As one Jet continues to sit out, another is ready to make a run at the starting job. Cornerback Dee Milliner is preparing to be starting Week 1, after being drafted with the ninth overall pick this year. Milliner has large shoes to fill after the departure of Derrelle Revis, but the Jets are confident that he step in immediately and be effective.
Pairing Milliner with Antonio Cromartie could make the Jets have one of the most talented secondary units in the NFL. Milliner will be competing against fellow former first-round draft pick, Kyle Wilson. Judging by Milliner's draft status, he is the favorite to win the job. Milliner is still recovering from a minor shoulder surgery, but is expected to be at full health come training camp.
