Jun 06, 2013 03:07 PM EDT

The 2013 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft is set to begin on Thursday night in New Jersey and the Houston Astros have the top selection after having a tough 2012 season and with the first and second rounds coming, the team is expected to get a prospect they hope will become a superstar down the line.

The team has a number of options at the top with names like Mark Appel from Stanford and Jonathan Gray from Oklahoma, as well as options like Kris Bryant from the University of San Diego or Colin Moran from the University of North Carolina. The first round will have 33 picks, including six compensatory ones, while the second round will have 29 selections of prospects. There will also be the competitive balance round and the event will start at 7 PM on MLB Network and streaming online at MLB.com. The Astros will pick first followed by the Chicago Cubs and the Colorado Rockies, while the Minnesota Twins and Cleveland Indians round out the top five. The Miami Marlins will pick sixth followed by the Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals. The Pirates are at number nine after Appel didn't sign last year and there is a good chance he will be gone after the first five picks.

The 40 round draft will continue through June 8 and will start coverage at 1 PM on Friday and Saturday, with rounds 10 through 40 coming after the first two. Following the Blue Jays at number 10 are the NY Mets, Seattle Mariners, who are picking out of the top three for the first time in three seasons, San Diego Padres, Pirates again, followed by the Diamondbacks and the Phillies. Scattered through the next crop of picks include the Rays, Tigers, Cardinals, Giants, Athletics, as well as the Yankees, who have three picks over the final eight of the round.
