Normally, San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh endorses competition at every position, but when it comes to quarterback Colt McCoy, Harbaugh is comfortable with him playing backup to starter Colin Kaepernick.
"He has been in that role since he got here," Harbaugh said. "He's doing very well, picking up the system. And a guy that is really serious and focused on being good and doing a good job. He's got a lot of things that motivate him to work hard. And he's worked extra hard, too. He's doing well."
Last year the 49ers were in a scramble to find a backup for Alex Smith until Kaepernick won the rights to the job over Scott Toizien and Josh Johnson. Now with Smith gone and Kaepernick and McCoy's positions already determined, Toizien will have to fend off rookie B.J. Daniels in order keep his roster spot.
McCoy has been the 49ers' No. 2 since arriving in an April 1 trade that cost the 49ers fifth- and seventh-round draft choices in exchange for McCoy and a sixth-round pick from the Cleveland Browns.
After being a college success at the University of Texas, McCoy went 6-15 as a starter in his first two seasons with the Browns, then sat most of last season behind rookie Brandon Weeden.
According to TheReporter.com, McCoy is poised to take over as backup, enthusiastically describing the offense as "game-plan-specific," meaning: "We have the potential to do a lot of different things. It'll be fun."
