JaMarcus Russell Rumors: Chicago Bears Deal Unlikely, CFL Option as Quarterback Battles Tim Tebow to Sign

Jun 08, 2013 08:36 AM EDT

Their were high hopes that JaMarcus Russell would complete his comeback into the NFL after the Chicago Bears brought the quarterback in for a workout with the team Friday. It was unclear what their motives were behind the tryout that also featured three other potential backups. The Bears already carry three quarterbacks on the roster, including veteran Jay Cutler. Well, if Russell was planning a comeback with the Bears, it is unlikely to happen.

Russell reported in at around 265 pounds, much lighter than his Oakland Raiders' days. Reports from the workout were generally positive, complimenting Russell on his arm strength and demonstrating a positive attitude in the workout. He looked rusty, but considering he has spent some significant time away from football, that it to be expected. However, it is apparent that the Bears have no intention of actually signing Russell to a contract.

Russell has been working with veteran NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia to try and erase the word "bust" from being associated with his name. The former No. 1 overall draft pick to the Oakland Raiders has not seen an NFL field since 2009 after the team released him. He won just seven starts in 25 games, throwing 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptionsi n the process. He had multiple off-the-field issues, including be charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Many assumed he was done in the league.

There is certainly a chance the Bears could sign him at the last minute. Along with Russell, the team also worked out three younger quarterbacks. They already have Cutler, Josh McCown and Matt Blanchard on the roster. They seem to want to bring in four quarterbacks to training camp, but Russell chances are very slim.

Russell is quickly joining the ranks of players like Tim Tebow who may be forced to call it a career. While Russell certainly shows signs of having all of the talent of an NFL quarterback, another year away from the league could spell disaster. If either quarterback does not sign with a team in the next 30 to 45 days, the Canadian Football League could be the only option.

Garcia went on the ESPN Radio to praise Russell and his hard work and improvement. He claims the quarterback is in better football shape with his mind and body. That kind of endorsement might just get Russell that contract sooner rather than later.
