The Kansas City Chiefs had the worst record in the NFL last season and ended up with the first overall pick in the draft, but after making the trade for 49ers quarterback Alex Smith and signing a number of free agents, head coach Andy Reid is poised to improve the team in 2013 in the AFC West.
The Chiefs were one of the teams that had minicamp early in June and now they will cease offseason workouts until training camp later in the summer, while the rest of the division with the Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers holding camps next week. The Chiefs have made a number of moves that should make the team much more talented in 2013, with names like Sean Smith, Anthony Fasano and Dunta Robinson joining the roster. Reid is putting his stamp on the roster after the draft with the selection of Eric Fisher with the number one overall pick and he also brought in Chase Daniel as a backup quarterback.
Reid likes to have a number of quarterbacks in the stable, like he did with Michael Vick and Nick Foles in Philadelphia, and he is doing the same with the Chiefs, bringing in undrafted free agent Tyler Bray. Some scouts felt that Bray was the most talented quarterback in the draft coming out of Tennessee for his big arm, but many questioned his maturity level and that is why he slipped in the draft. He had some interest from the Steelers, but instead Reid pulled him in after Bray was projected to be a mid-round pick. According to ESPN.com, Bray may have a chance to last on the 53-man roster after the workouts, as Reid said that he did a good job in the offense during camp workouts and he likely would be the number three quarterback on the depth chart behind Smith and Daniel.
Reid said he had a good handle on the offense and that bodes well for Bray, as he possesses and above average arm and a coach like Reid could be perfect to get him ready for the NFL. Smith is an accurate quarterback and Daniel is a capable backup and having Bray on the roster will be a way for Reid to develop a solid talent that could even be used for trade bait down the line, much like Matt Flynn and Matt Schaub.
The Chiefs offense is expected to improve under Reid and after having six Pro Bowl players last year on a 2-14 team, there is still a good amount of talent on the roster, including running back Jamaal Charles. Smith will have a talented mate in the backfield for 2013 after taking over as the starter and Charles had a great season with over 1,500 yards rushing after coming back from a serious knee injury. Charles has shown he has a feel for the passing game and Reid will likely push that in the offense to help Smith move the chains and put Charles in explosive situations. Reid used LeSean McCoy in a similar way when he was with the Eagles and Charles could have a very productive year in the offense.
