Sebastian Vettel seized pole position in the Canadian Grand Prix, on a track which refused to dry out after heavy rain in the afternoon.

Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes will accompany Red Bull's Vettel in the front row, with Valtteri Bottas surprisingly clinching third place on the Williams.

Vettel timed 1:25.425 for the fastest lap, with Hamilton coming in a close second on 1:25.512.

"It was very, very tricky, especially because you never knew what the conditions were like the next time you were out," Vettel said of the qualifying session. "So obviously it was intermediate tyres throughout but extremely tricky to adapt, especially in the last qualifying section.

"We decided to have two runs, we thought the second run will be quicker because we had a new set of tyres left but it started to drizzle, in the last sector in particular, in the last chicane. I went straight on one lap and then the second lap I had a mistake somewhere else, so it turned out that the conditions were best for the first run.

"So that was a bit of a surprise because obviously you target on a set of new tyres to push a little bit harder. Very happy the first lap was good enough. It was very tight with Lewis.

"Congratulations to Valtteri, I think he did an extraordinary job putting the Williams on P3 but for us, extremely happy with the result and looking forward to the race. I think we had strong pace yesterday (Friday) so no matter the conditions, we should be in decent shape."

Bottas took advantage of the wet conditions in Montreal and is hoping for some more help from the Rain Gods during the race Sunday.

"I think the fact is in the dry the car doesn't belong to P3 at the moment, so yeah, of course some rain would help us like it did in the qualifying," he said. "Because I think we found, for the Inter tyres especially, a quite good way of how to really work the tyre, the right temperatures and everything - so I hope so."

Monaco GP winner Nico Rosberg of Mercedes will start alongside Bottas in fourth, with Vettel's teammate Mark Webber fifth and Fernando Alonso, driving the Ferrari, only managing sixth.

Fellow title contender Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus disappointed and will start in the fifth row after posting the ninth best time.
