Derek Jeter was put through a couple of physical exercises as he returned to the field on Monday. Brian Cashman, the New York Yankees' general manager, said Jeter was seen fielding grounders, swinging and long tossing.
As ESPN reported, Jeter took 25 swings and fielded 20 grounders hit directly at him.
This is definitely good news for the Yankees who have suffered inconsistent play at shortstop throughout the season. Currently, many are still surprised that the Yankees are in second place. In fact, it's surprising that, with their lineup, the Yankees have a winning record as they are 37-26 in 2013. With strong pitching, New York has placed itself in the race and their true stars are getting healthy as the season rolls along.
How long will it be before Jeter returns?
Rumors have it that Jeter is set for a post-All-Star Game return. The Mid-Summer Classic will be played on July 16. If the Yankees can continue playing well for at least a month, they will place themselves in great position to stay in the race for the A.L. East. There is no doubt Jeter will make the team better by simply being on the field and in the lineup. However, the Yankees will use precaution with the franchise's all-time hits leader. A specific date for Jeter's return has yet to be set, but if his ankle heals and rehab continues to roll along, there is a strong chance the Yankees will be marking an expected start date for Jeter on their calendar.
The Yankees are gradually returning to their normal All-Star packed lineup. Mark Teixeira has been in action and though facing a rumored 100-game suspension, Alex Rodriguez has been more active in rehab. Rodriguez's timetable is also a huge question mark, but seeing Jeter get on the field in Tampa Bay is really great news for the Yankees.
The Yankees are currently relying on Jayson Nix to man the shortstop position with Reid Brignac helping out at times. The Yankees might have picked the wrong time to get rid of Ramiro Peña, who is currently with the Atlanta Braves and providing pop and infield play as a utility man and pinch-hitter. Peña spent the first four years of his MLB career with the Yankees and received only four at bats in 2012. He was released and the Braves jumped on him and he's hit three home runs and driven in 14 runs in 47 games.
Expect Jeter to continue headlining Yankees stories as the team and fans can't wait for his return.
