The 2013 NBA Finals is tied 1-1 as the Miami Heat crushed the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 Sunday night. When looking at the entire series, the Heat have controlled the scoreboard and have imposed their will on the Spurs. This means Miami is getting their way against the Spurs and if they continue playing this way, they will win game 3.
So far in this short series, the Heat have won five, tied two and lost just one of the eight quarters played in the Finals against the Spurs. Miami has started off games slowly. In Game 1, they won the first quarter by just a point and Game 2 saw a tie in the first quarter. The Spurs have been physical as usual, but Heat have done a decent job shooting from the floor. Their three-point game was off in Game 1, but they picked that up in Game 2.
The key to the Heat is turnovers. They have succeeded because they have kept the ball. The one quarter they loss in the Finals was the most pivotal as the Spurs were able to hit shots and the Heat were unable to keep their possessions committing five turnovers. They committed six total turnovers in Game 2. Miami couldn't get anything working in the final quarter of Game 1 and as a result, the Spurs were merciless and they defeated the Heat as they seemed to barely miss shots.
In Game 2, LeBron James got off to a slow start while Ray Allen, Chris Bosh and Mario Chalmers all put down double-figures in scoring helping the Heat keep pace with the Spurs who were launching it from three and getting a very good game from Danny Green. In the end, both teams finished with 10 threes and the Spurs outrebounded the Heat 44-36, but San Antonio had a whopping 17 turnovers in this game. They were able to hang around for a good portion of the game, until the Heat began knocking down consecutive shots and the Spurs couldn't buy a bucket.
James has yet to go on a crazy scoring binge and that is bound to happen at any moment. The Spurs need greater support from Manu Ginobili who has yet to make a true appearance in these NBA Finals scoring 13 points in Game 1 and adding just five points in Game 2. The Heat bench has outplayed San Antonio's so far in the NBA Finals. Allen is contributing greatly from beyond the arc and Mike Miller is once again leaving his mark all over this round of the playoffs.
The Spurs will need to keep the ball and try to avoid giving the Heat extra possessions. Once the Spurs lost rhythm in the fourth, James went 4-4 from the floor and dropped nine points in the quarter. Look for Gregg Popovich to make the adequate adjustments, but in the end, the Heat have more talent and when they execute and play defense, the Spurs don't stand a chance.
